Stiff Neck And Shoulders
Do you suffer with stiff neck and shoulders? You may have lactic acid build up.
Shoulder Knots
Painful, stiff shoulders are often the result of poor posture (round shoulders) from too many hours sitting at the computer. We have become very sedentary and spend more than 90% of our day in flexed positions which can cause osteoarthritis in the spinal discs over time.
Relieve Muscle Pain
One way to relieve painful shoulders is to learn how to remove your own muscular knots. Muscle knots are areas where lactic acid builds up and forms painful knots known as trigger points. Sometimes the knots in your shoulder cause pain to be sent to other areas distant from your shoulders (referred pain). If you are interested in what areas may be affected by the knots in your shoulders check out this great little Trigger Point Map.
Trigger Point Therapy
You will need a tennis ball to remove your own muscle knots using trigger point therapy. The idea here is that you apply pressure to the knotted area of the shoulders, with the tennis ball and when the discomfort subsides you remove the tennis ball and the increased blood flow helps to ‘wash away’ the lactic acid. You should stretch your shoulder muscles after this exercise.
If this video is helpful and you want to also learn how to remove muscle knots from your lower back then see that video HERE
If you found this video surprisingly easy and wish you had known about this exercise long ago, then please share with our fellow posture pupils by tweeting this post. Thanks!!

[..YouTube..] I have a point in my right midthoracic area, when I press it with the ball I find my entire right arms starts to feel a bit numb… I stayed on it for over a minute but the soreness doesn’t go away. I think the pain is connected somewhere in my right triceps as well. Shall I keep lining on it even if my arm feels numb?
[..YouTube..] Sounds like you are referring to your rhomboid muscle-a common site for trigger points. Yes it is tricky to get the hang of it but even with giant size ‘ball’ knots it works once you have the technique or holding without slipping. You should try bare skin and if tennis ball not working try small rubber ball but watch out, this can get quite sore!
[..YouTube..] I have about 3 spots on my back that are not tender to the tennis ball. They feel just like balls. theyre along my the edge of my scapula it feels like. and everytime i try to roll them out, the tennis ball rolls off. like i said it feels like a ball, so the tennis ball cannot stay on the trigger point. I did fracture the transverse processes of my L3 and L4. I also have a transitional vertebrae of the S5,L1. thoughts?
[..YouTube..] You’re Great!! Thanks so Much!
[..YouTube..] I love you guys-so wonderfully encouraging thank you!
[..YouTube..] OK,…this woman,…THIS WOMAN!! AWESOME!!! : )
[..YouTube..] Great sock idea!
[..YouTube..] the exercises you showed are awesome. many thanks Paula
[..YouTube..] You look like a killer
[..YouTube..] LOL one of my clients designed the sock idea to keep it from dropping to the floor.
[..YouTube..] wow, my upper back feels great!! but not my shoulders bcuz the tennis ball keeps slipping out everytime i try leaning my shoulders…
[..YouTube..] Interesting video,,thanks
[..YouTube..] I will make an appointment soon then. Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it.

[..YouTube..] Don’t worry trigger points don’t spread but stress and poor posture can create more trigger points definitely. See a chiropractor this time. We know how to treat trigger points and help you with appropriate exercises. GPs aren’t specialists in musculoskeletal problems. 18 is young. With the right help you will heal well and stay well!

[..YouTube..] yeah it is =( the thing is I am only 18 and I am quite good at tolerating pain but I have seen my GP and he is convinced there is nothing wrong with me. The trigger points feel like wire under my skin and I can count at least 9. Really worried that they are going to continue spreading.

[..YouTube..] Ouch that sounds uncomfortable! You need to find out why this is happening. Are you stressed out? Does your PC set up need altering? Are you not taking any breaks at work? Are you doing any stretching or exercise? It amazes me that ‘people’ (I’m sure not you lol) expect their body to perform as if still 20 years old without any exercise or good nutrition. Doesn’t work! Please see a health care practitioner.

[..YouTube..] I started with a trigger point in my back now its spreading everywhere what can I do. self massage and the tennis ball barely provide temporary relief. I swear I get a new trigger point every few weeks please help!
[..YouTube..] Hello. So pleased you like the exercise. Yes please be careful, you can bruise the muscle if you push too hard. The floor is another great position to use. Thanks for your comment!
[..YouTube..] Wow, it never occurred to me that I could just lean against the wall with the tennis ball, I’ve been rolling around on the floor with it underneath my back and actually ended up hurting myself because I wasn’t being careful enough. This is way better, allows me more flexibility in how much pressure I apply to the trigger points. Thanks a bunch!:)
[..YouTube..] thx
[..YouTube..] alright, i’ll go and see my doctor soon, thank you very much for helping me!

[..YouTube..] Hello! Well if some of your joints are hypermobile, it is likely many are. This diagnosis is for your health care practitioner. My experience of those with hypermobility is the lax joints may sometimes cause much too much movement-overworking the muscles and joints and possibly thus leading to pain/discomfort. Be sure to see your doctor or chiropractor. Thanks for your questions!

[..YouTube..] A diagnosis can not be made on line but you may be hypermobile. That is that your joints may be overly mobile. Your doctor or chiropractor can diagnose this.

[..YouTube..] Uhm…can someone please help me? im a 14 year old girl and everytime i ‘roll my shoulders’ there’s really loud cracking/crushing noises comming from my shoulders, it’s especially my right shoulder because it feel like there’s a nerve stuck or my entire muscle is being ripped out or something – please help me!
[..YouTube..] Fantastic!! I quite agree.
[..YouTube..] Awesome! I am becoming healed tonight thanks to a few people and your great tips! LOL! Beats the heck out of pain medicines!
[..YouTube..] wow, thx doc!
[..YouTube..] Pleasure!! Thank you.
[..YouTube..] I love love love you for posting these!! Helped me bunches!!
[..YouTube..] Love your vids!!!!!!!!! Learning tons for myself and clients!
[..YouTube..] once or twice a day and continue even after your symptoms disappear (at least 3x a week to make sure the knots are not building up again)
[..YouTube..] @dazzammm once or twice a day and continue even after your symptoms disappear (at least 3x a week to make sure the knots are not building up again)
[..YouTube..] How often should you do this?
[..YouTube..] I use a lacrosse ball
[..YouTube..] Nice and simple I like a lot!
[..YouTube..] Thank you! Yes I too have used a golf ball but bruising is more common. Tennis ball more friendly. Glad it’s helpful!!
[..YouTube..] Great video. I’m a kick-boxer and with my constant punching of the bag I get a lots of knots throughout the year. I find the tennis ball fantastic for getting rid of knots in my shoulders and it save me loads of money that I used spend going to my physio. For deeper relief I have used a golf ball but the pain threshold is bit more intense but fantastic when that trigger point releases.
